What the technology actually is
An energy management system turns business priorities into setpoints for solar, batteries, generators and controllable loads. It needs measured inputs, a documented optimization hierarchy and safe local fallback; a dashboard alone is not an EMS.
Define dispatch priorities, tariff logic, demand limits, reserve, forecasts, alarms, manual authority, data retention, interfaces and acceptance tests.

Where it can create value
A useful EMS can coordinate peak limits, reserve, tariff windows, critical loads and operating constraints across equipment brands. It should expose why a decision was made and allow authorized operators to intervene safely.
- An EMS dashboard is not proof that dispatch will protect cost, continuity and equipment constraints together.
- The decision crosses operating, electrical, commercial or regulatory boundaries.
- Management needs a defensible next step before committing capital.

What commonly breaks the business case
Optimizers can move cost or risk rather than remove it: charging may create a new peak, aggressive cycling may consume warranty throughput, and cloud loss may freeze unsafe assumptions. Hidden algorithms make acceptance and dispute resolution difficult.
