What the technology actually is
Protection and switchgear establish the boundaries that isolate faults and allow safe operation. Solar, BESS and generators change fault contribution, direction of power flow and operating states, so an old coordination study may no longer describe the plant.

Where it can create value
The package includes breakers, disconnects, relays, fuses, contactors, earthing, interlocks, emergency stops and labels appropriate to voltage and fault duty. Maintainability and safe isolation are design requirements, not drawings added at handover.

What commonly breaks the business case
A device can have adequate nominal current yet inadequate interrupting duty or selectivity. Island mode may reduce fault current below an existing trip threshold, while bidirectional flow can invalidate directional and interlocking assumptions.
