What commonly breaks the business case

Competing voltage or frequency masters can oscillate; reverse power can trip a generator; low SOC can remove expected support during a start. Communication loss and a failed return to grid are operational states, not edge cases.

Practical decision guide

From a start signal to a tested operating sequence

Consider a Philippine shrimp farm with aerators that must continue operating while utility power is unavailable. A generator start command is only the beginning of the sequence: the engine must start, its output must become acceptable, the transfer arrangement must permit connection, and the critical loads must be supplied during that interval. A supervisory controller cannot make an undersized inverter carry a motor start, and a large battery cannot compensate for a generator that fails to start. Define the maximum permitted interruption for each load before selecting hardware.

Write a state table before writing automation. Useful states include grid available, battery-supported island, generator starting, generator supplying loads, battery recharge, utility restoration and manual maintenance. For each state, identify the voltage/frequency reference, permitted breaker positions, power limits and authority to change state. Two controllers independently trying to regulate the same variable can produce unstable behaviour. Whether parallel operation is allowed depends on the actual generator, inverter, protection and synchronization design; a dry-contact start relay is not evidence of that capability.

Reserve must cover the transition, not simply display a reassuring SOC percentage. As an illustrative energy-only calculation, a constant 40 kW load for five minutes needs 3.33 kWh at the AC load. At an assumed 90% conversion efficiency, that is about 3.70 kWh from the battery before auxiliaries and further margins. These numbers do not specify a farm design: motor surge, phase imbalance, battery discharge limits, ageing, temperature and a second failed-start attempt may dominate. Use measured load steps and the actual BMS/PCS envelopes to establish a usable reserve.

A useful acceptance test does not stop at a successful sunny-day transfer. Witness a failed generator start, low available battery reserve, a step increase in load, loss of the supervisory data link, and restoration of utility power. Record timestamps, bus voltage and frequency, battery power, alarm behaviour and operator actions. Agree thresholds with the equipment suppliers and responsible engineer before testing; do not disable safety interlocks to obtain a pass. A maintenance bypass and locally understandable recovery procedure matter when the site has no internet or the usual technician is unavailable.

Victron documentation provides a concrete example of configurable SOC start/stop conditions, minimum running time and warm-up/cool-down features. Availability depends on compatible equipment and firmware; it is not a universal specification for every BESS. Philippine electrical, utility and fire requirements must be assessed separately for the project. European operating experience helps us ask better questions, but does not substitute for local approval.
